Amundsen Sea

Everybody loves to see the beautiful waves of the sea. With the mild and gentle wind that blows on your skin, and the soft fine sand of the sea in which you walk on, it can become an experience you would never want to forget.

Even with the large number of seas that are scattered all over the world, many people still find it an habit to go to one special sea. One of the seas in the world is the Amundsen sea, which has cool and interesting characteristics you should know about. And maybe, it just might become your own special sea too.

Amundsen Sea Facts for Kids

  • In 1929, Roald Amundsen who was a Norwegian polar, explored the area of the Amundsen sea. The Norwegian expedition of 1928–1929 under Captain Nils Larsen named the sea after Roald Amundsen. The boundary between the Amundsen sea and the Bellingshausen sea is marked by the Cape Flying Fish.
  • The Amundsen sea is an arm of the Southern ocean, off the Marie Byrd Land in the western area of the Antarctica, and lies just between Cape Flying Fish and Cape Dart.
  • The Amundsen sea embayment is a very recognized area in the Amundsen sea. Ice sheet drains into the Amundsen Sea Embayment(ASE), which is about the size of the U.S state of Texas. Also, the Amundsen Sea Embayment forms one of the three major ice drainage basins of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. The Russell bay and the Pine Island bay are highly recognized bays of the Amundsen sea. The Russell bay is an open bay, and is located towards the southwestern region of the Amundsen sea. As for the Pine Island bay, it is located at the extreme southeast of the Amundsen sea, and is about 64 kilometers long.
  • Glaciers are large bodies of ice which float under their own mass. The Amundsen sea has specific regions that are well made up of glaciers. Two major glaciers flow into the Amundsen sea, and these glaciers are the Pine Island Glaciers and the Thwaites glaciers. Also, the two glaciers are two of five of Antarctica’s largest glaciers.
  • The entire Amundsen sea is mostly covered with ice. This is due to the intense weather condition in the area, as well as its geographical area(location) on earth. Due to the fact that the Amundsen sea is in the Antarctican region, glaciers of different sizes can be found floating on its surface. However, researchers claim that due to volcanic activity, there has been a considerable amount of contribution to an increase in glacial flow in the region of the sea.
  • The area is home to a volcano, which lies just north of the Pine Island Glacier. It can be found near the Hudson mountains. The eruption, they say, was the largest to have occurred in the past ten thousand years.
  • In the year 2008, an expedition to the sea was carried out, and thirty new marine species were discovered. And one of them was found feeding on the remains of an octopus beak.
  • The Amundsen sea serves as an habitat for many aquatic animals. Animals such as starfish, sea cucumber, as well as sea urchins can be found in and around the sea.
  • The sea is home to a large number of basins, some of which reach as far as 1,600 meters.
  • The Amundsen sea has a moderate rate of salinity. The concentration of salt in the sea is mostly due to the presence of glaciers and ice.
