  • Eritrea’s water is a residential area for many living creatures. About 14,000 species of fish have their homes in the water bodies found in Eritrea, whereby 14 percent of these fish have not been discovered in any other water bodies in the world.
  • The shoreline of the Red Sea located in Eritrea is also an ideal tourist attraction site since it contains warm waters which is good for sporting activities.
  • The most common types of fish found in the water bodies located in Eritrea are; Lake Abaeded fish, cyprinid Garra fish, Gobius fish and tilefish among others.
  • Some of the oldest cities in Africa are in Eritrea, for example the Port city of Adulis which is among the African ancient cities.
  • Some experts refer Eritrea as the Cradle of the universe since some of the oldest human fossils on earth have been discovered here.
  • Eritrea is ranked second after Egypt in terms of ancient discoveries of human activities. The number of discovered sites where human activities took place in the past is currently at 80,000.
  • The common religions in Eritrea are Christianity and Islam, whereby Christianity is common in Asmara while Islam is common in the shore region and lowlands of Eritrea.
  • Politically, the president is the head of the government in Eritrea, but Eritrea has had only one president since independence who’s named is Isaias Afwerki.  Eritrea is a country where elections are always planned but none has ever happened.
  • Eritrea covers a total area which is estimated to be approximately 117,600 square km which is equivalent to 45,400 square miles making it to be the 99th largest nation on earth in terms of land coverage. The shoreline of Eritrea has a length of 2,234 km (1,338 miles).
  • Eritrea experiences varying climatic conditions. Asmara has an enjoyable climatic condition with a mean temperature of 16 degrees and an annual rainfall of 508 mm.
  • Eritrea split from Ethiopia in 1962 as a province which marked the onset of struggle for independence. By 1990 women had joined the Eritrean freedom fighters increasing their number to 40 percent of all the freedom fighters. This made the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front to record the highest percentage of women freedom fighters than any other liberation movement in the world.
  • Eritrea is the first country on Earth to conserve a shoreline as a reserve. The group of islands known as the Dahlak is usually considered as a world-renowned for their good production of pearls and for the fact that they are widely unoccupied.
